Drawing Beneath the Surface: Inspiration from a Psychopath (it’s not that weird…)

Woohoo I’m back! Finally!  Had some super annoying server issues which took ages to sort out but fingers crossed it’s smooth sailing from here and I can actually get back to regular posts again.  So this week I’m going to share the story behind my favourite art piece so far – I’ve loosely called it…

Drawing Someone I Don’t Know

So last week I received a request (via Instagram) which was both challenging and rewarding – nope nothing to do with parenting or teaching despite the adjective use.  I knew the drawing was going to be difficult for a number of reasons: I had never seen the subjects of the drawing before – I like…

2017…What’s New? (Some things are new)

Happy New Year!

It’s 2017 which means all the clichés about fresh starts and positive changes come out from their Jan/Feb 2016 hibernation.

Okay I can be more upbeat about the new year than that…I just don’t think all the ‘resolution’ labelling helps. At least not me anyway.

So I won’t be doing dry January but I am going to cut out alcohol this month – for myself rather than to jump on the back of a trend but that’s enough about me…

Looking In The Mirror: Self Portrait Struggles

So the issue that I have with the dreaded self-portrait is that I’m not overly enthusiastic about looking at myself in the mirror. I think most of us have this problem. I’m not going to launch into a long spiel about self-confidence and all that but needless to say, looking at yourself for an extended period of time definitely proves challenging.

You can choose how your posts will appear, sorted by date, custom, random, and other types… you choose.

And the Winner is…

Hello again! First of all, I am aware that I have not posted for a couple of weeks…

Something Different

So if you’ve been reading my blog, you will know that I’ve been thinking about moving away from my usual celebrity drawings and focussing on art that is closer to home. This is for a number of reasons – mainly the fact that I like the idea of composing a drawing from start to finish, including setting the scene and taking the photographs. I’m also one of those people who likes to change things up every once in a while, so it makes sense that this is reflected in my artwork.

Zooming In

This week I’ve been working on a larger scale portrait of the human face (my sister kindly agreed to pose for me). If you saw my post last week then you’ll know that I’m working towards a final piece of sorts – this drawing is a work in progress but it should be finished by next week. I’m definitely feeling more comfortable moving away from celebrity drawings, although it does still take some getting used to.

Bro, Do You Even Cross-Hatch?

A few of you have asked about specific pencil techniques so this week’s post is all about hatching and cross-hatching. I’m going to show you how I’ve taken aspects of the various hatching techniques and applied them to my latest drawing.

Art Laid Bare – Are You Brave Enough?

A step-by-step guide to a technique I like to call ‘art laid bare.’ Are you brave enough to give it a try?

Jolt! A Coloured Pencil Portrait of My Sister

So I think I’ve settled on Jolt! as the title for this piece. It’s finally finished! If you follow me on social media (namely Twitter) then you’ll know that I actually finished this portrait of my sister a little while ago but I realise that I haven’t said much about it yet. Thoughts First of all,…
